Ignacia Bordallo Butler
Ignacia Bordallo Butler (1897 – 1993) was a CHamoru entrepreneur and business partner with her husband, Chester Butler, who together successfully ran Butler’s Inc. She is also remembered for her strength in dealing with Japanese soldiers during World War II in Guam.
Governor Joseph Flores
Joseph Flores (1900 – 1981) was the first CHamoru to serve as governor of Guam. He also founded Guam’s first locally owned newspaper and financial institution, and was one of Guam’s most prominent post World War II businessmen.

Chester Carl Butler
Chester Carl Butler (1884 – 1952) founded Butler’s Inc. in 1915, along with his wife Ignacia Bordallo Butler. It survives today as the oldest family business on Guam.
Ambrosio Torres Shimizu
Ambrosio Torres Shimizu (1909 – 1988) is well known on Guam for he and his family’s success in business. His Japanese father, Jose Katsuji Shimizu, moved to the Mariana Islands in the early 1900s and has been credited for making rice a staple food on Guam.
Early American Economic History
When the US established a military government in Guam in 1899 it became clear that the costs of administering Guam would be high. The US military government renewed the efforts started by the Spanish government to establish an agricultural economy on the island.
