Partition of the Marianas

A diplomatic history 1898-1919. The Marianas archipelago was first inhabited some 3,500 years ago by people who originally came from Island Southeast Asia. Today the indigenous inhabitants are known as CHamorus/Chamorros.

George Tweed

George R. Tweed (1902 – 1989) – was an American Navy man who was able to escape capture from the Japanese during their occupation of Guam in World War II, and the only American to survive the entire occupation in hiding.

Institute of Ethnic Affairs

Husband and wife John Collier and Laura Thompson started the Institute of Ethnic Affairs in 1945 as a nonprofit organization whose purpose was to search for solutions to problems within and between white and colored races, cultural minority groups, and dependent peoples at home and abroad. The Institute’s goal was to recommend administrative changes requiring governmental action.

Guam Buddhism Society

The Guam Buddhism Society, the non-profit community organization associated with Guam’s Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple, was founded in 1986 and has built the only traditional Mahayana Buddhist temple in Guam. The temple, located off Bello Road near the Guam International Airport, is a monumental blend of the Chinese palatial style and the style of a traditional Buddhist temple.
