Janice Furukawa

Janice SN Furukawa earned a BA in journalism with an emphasis on Pacific Islands history, US foreign policy and linguistics from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa in 1987.
Furukawa has an extensive professional background in Guam and the Micronesia region. She has worked as a reporter, editor and publisher for Guam, Saipan, and Palau newspapers and other publications and has worked in radio and public television. During the 1980’s and 90’s she worked for the Office of the Governor of Guam and the Guam Legislature, writing and coordinating communications as an independent contractor. She has also done work in sales and marketing including experience in Guam’s visitor industry.
Furukawa has also served as an educator and administrator. She has taught English, Language Arts and Chamorro language, history, and culture courses in Guam’s public school system, Guam Community College, Chief Gadao Academy, the Japanese School of Guam, and San Vicente Catholic School.
In addition, she has completed and continues to work on numerous humanities projects such as the non-profit Chamoru Cultural Development & Research Institute’s village human resource directory and grant-writing with the Department of Chamorro Affairs for language research funding. Furukawa is a native daughter of Guam, wife, and mother of two.
She worked as a copy editor for the Guampedia project.
