Steven Amesbury earned a PhD in zoology from the University of Hawai’i and holds an MS in zoology and a BA in anthropology from the University of Arizona.

Amesbury is a former professor of marine biology and a former director of the Marine Laboratory at the University of Guam. His research interests are reef fish and terrestrial crabs.

Field trips to the Sea of Cortez in Mexico and an oceanographic cruise from Ecuador to California stimulated his interest in marine fish. This interest was further pursued at the University of Hawai’i where he completed his doctoral work. Amesbury began working at the University of Guam in 1974, and during his years there he had opportunities to study fish throughout Micronesia as well as in Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, and French Polynesia.
